Elle commence sa carrière dans le mannequinat. Ses débuts dans le cinéma consistent à donner la réplique à un homme singe (personnage interprété par Christophe]Christophe Lambert en 1984 dans le film Greystoke, la légende de Tarzan.
Elle retrouve les succès glamour des catwalks avec son rôle dans Quatre mariages et un enterrement (Four Weddings and a Funeral), dont le succès relance la comédie britannique du milieu des années 1990.
Elle a quatre enfants : Justin, né en 1986, Rainey, née en 1989, Sarah Margaret, née en 1995 et Pat Milesi, née en 2007.
